On November 8th, staff from Sjókovin | Blue Resource attended a conference organised by Firum, called Vitan til Varandi Aling, which means Knowledge for Sustainable Aquaculture.
EU-Funded BioProtect Initiative Launches to Restore & Protect Marine Biodiversity in the Atlantic & Arctic Oceans
In response to the pressing challenges posed by human activities and climate change on marine ecosystems, BioProtect, a newly-funded EU project, has been officially launched. Coordinated by MATIS in Iceland, the 8 million EUR bring together 18 partners from 8 countries.
Over the next four years, these partners will collaborate to develop innovative, adaptable, and scalable ecosystem-centered solutions aimed at safeguarding and restoring biodiversity across European seas, from the Arctic to the Atlantic Ocean.
Conference on Environmental impacts and energy transition in the Nordic seafood sector
On the 13th of September 2023, a conference on the environmental impacts and energy transitions in the Nordic seafood sector will be held at the Harpa in Reykjavík, Iceland.
The conference will focus on the environmental impact of fisheries and address opportunities to reduce carbon emissions in the fishing industry through energy efficiency measures and shifting to alternative fuels.
Sjókovin - Blue Resource leads the Faroese project, 'SmartFisk', which focuses on reducing the oil consumption in the Faroese fishing fleet
Sjókovin – Blue Resource will lead a new project focusing on minimizing oil consumption in the Faroese fishing industry. The project starts in May 2023 and runs for three years.
Sjokovin has participated in the interdisciplinary work of writing an ICES report on the aquaculture industry in the Faroe Islands.
In May 2022, a working group of specialists was assigned to create an overview of the Faroese aquaculture industry.
In the working group there were representatives from the Faroese authorities, advisers and researchers within the field of biology, economics, and political science. Sjokovin participated in this work and was responsible for the socio-economic analyses.
Sjókovin - Blue Resource participates in a large project on nature management in coastal and sea areas financed by Horizon Europe
MarineSABRES is an EU-funded research project that aims to address the continued and accelerated biodiversity loss caused by the intensification of human activities at land and sea. The project brings together an international consortium of 22 partners across 11 countries and has received €9.8m in funding from Horizon Europe. The project started in September 2022 and runs for 4 years.
Sjókovin - Blue Resource participates in a ground-breaking project about seaweed funded by Horizon Europe
Sjókovin - Blue Resource is part of a consortium, led by the Faroese Ocean Rainforest, comprising 25 international, cross-disciplinary partners that have been awarded €9 million Horizon Europe grant to upscale seaweed production and market applications across Europe. The project is titled SeaMark and started 1. July and runs for four years.

Sjókovin - Blue Resource has published an article in the journal Climate Change
Researchers at Sjokovin have in collaboration with other researchers written a scientific article titled ‘Guidelines for co-creating climate adaptation plans for fisheries and aquaculture’. The objective was to provide a stepwise approach to facilitate and enable stakeholders to plan strategies toward climate adaptation. The results are published in an article in the journal Climatic Change.
Educational material on sustainable fisheries and aquaculture awarded Silver at the Best European Learning Material Awards (BELMA)
At an online awards ceremony today, it became clear that the material that Sjókovin – Blue Resource, have created in collaboration with the IT company Tøkni og the Faroese Educational authority Nám, had been awarded the silver in category 3 encompassing materials for the age groups 12 – 17 years. The material teaches students about sustainability in the seafood sectors, and connects local and global perspectives through increased knowledge of local food seafood production, whilst relating these to global perspectives and challenges in an integrated way.
Blue Resource to lead research project on the impacts of Covid-19 for Faroese Seafood production and implications for Faroese economy
We are delighted to announce that The Faroese Research Council has granted funding to a research project coordinated by Blue Resource focusing on the effects of Covid-19 on seafood production in the Faroes. The project is a collaboration between Blue Resource and the University of the Faroe Islands
Independent, not-for-profit research centre, Blue Resource, established
It is a great pleasure to announce that Blue Resource was formally established on the 30th of March.
Blue Resource was co-founded by three of large fishing companies, Varðin, Framherji and Christian í Grótinum, the aquaculture company Hiddenfjord, and the research company Syntesa. The founders have donated basic capital to the fund. The research to be conducted within Blue Resource will be financed through research activities and consulting services within the seafood sector, in particular.
