A successful week for Sjókovin

A successful week with many interesting presentations and discussions has come to an end!

From 17–21 August, the International Institute of Fisheries Economics and Trade (IIFET) 2026 conference was held in the Faroe Islands, bringing together researchers and stakeholders to discuss important issues facing fisheries and the wider marine sector.

Throughout the week, researchers from Sjókovin contributed to several sessions and presentations.

At the IIFET conference, Unn was one of the keynote speakers and spoke about the importance of knowledge and research in supporting decision-making in the marine resource industry. Several projects that Sjókovin is involved in aim to strengthen knowledge and understanding of the marine resource industry, helping to provide a better basis for informed and sustainable decisions.

As part of the session Unn was chairing on climate change and fisheries, Magni presented findings from SmartFisk on fuel use in the Faroese fishing fleet and how it can be made more efficient.

In the session chaired by Juliana, the focus was on low-trophic aquaculture and its potential to contribute to more sustainable food systems. Here Magni presented results from the SeaMark project on seaweed cultivation. Juliana had a presentation where she explained that to scale seaweed cultivation, recognition of its environmental benefits and better integration of seaweed into markets and institutions is needed.

 Sanna was part of the team organising IIFET 2026 and was recognised for her contribution to the conference.

Sigurgunn gave a presentation in Klaksvík as part of their Fisherman's Day, where she presented the current state of the Faroese fisheries sector, with a particular focus on demersal fisheries.
