Sjókovin / Blue Resource 5th Anniversary

Five years have passed since Sjókovin was founded with the aim of promoting sustainable development and innovation in the marine resources industries. We are celebrating the day with an exciting conference at Varpið in Klaksvík on Friday, March 28, where we will explore opportunities and challenges in the fisheries and aquaculture sectors.

The Minister of Fisheries and Transport, Jóhan Christiansen, will welcome everyone. Following that, Unn Laksá, Director of Sjókovin, will reflect on the work of the first five years and what lies ahead. Sjókovin’s 2024 Annual Report on the fisheries sector will be presented, followed by a discussion with representatives from Faroese research institutions about how we can obtain better data and statistics for research—and how important this is for knowledge and development in the marine industries.

Throughout the day, there will be several engaging presentations from our closest partners.

  • Alexandra Leeper from Iceland Ocean Cluster will present the “100% Fish” concept—about innovative products made from residual raw materials, and the challenges of turning ideas into marketable and profitable solutions.

  • Jónas R. Viðarsson from Matís will discuss how Matís supports innovation and value creation in fisheries and aquaculture.

  • Ólafur Ögmundurson from the University of Iceland will present analysis results on reducing CO₂ emissions and other negative environmental impacts in the fishing and aquaculture sectors.

  • Petter Olsen from Nofima will speak about food fraud and traceability, and how blockchain technology can be used to improve seafood traceability systems.

  • Michaela Aschan from UiT will introduce the new interdisciplinary Ph.D. school, A Changing Arctic, which aims to develop a new generation of researchers.

Researchers from Sjókovin will also present ongoing projects and studies, including those on oil use, seaweed farming, pelagic fisheries, longline fisheries, alternative proteins in food and feed production, and marine biodiversity protection. There will be a discussion on how to improve collaboration between research and industry.

The day will conclude with a conversation with Annika Sølvará, Director of the Research Council of the Faroe Islands, who will summarize the day and reflect on the Faroese research environment.

During the breaks, there will be an exhibition of marine-based products from Faroese companies and the Iceland Ocean Cluster. Information about projects run by Sjókovin and its partners will also be available.

Everyone is warmly welcome! The conference is a great opportunity to connect and gain inspiration, knowledge, and insight into key issues for the development of our core industries.

We look forward to seeing you!
