Sjókovin at Nordic Climate Change Forum for Fisheries and Aquaculture

On 29 January, the Nordic Climate Change Forum for Fisheries and Aquaculture was held in Helsingborg. The conference brought together around 45 researchers and experts from the fisheries and aquaculture sectors in the Nordic countries to discuss how climate change and other challenges will shape the future of Nordic and European fisheries.

The purpose of the conference was to create opportunities for stakeholders from the fisheries and aquaculture sectors to meet and share knowledge and experiences, in order to identify ways to reduce emissions and adapt Nordic fisheries and aquaculture to climate change.

Several exciting presentations were on the agenda. One of these was given by Unn Laksá, CEO of Sjókovin, who presented the MeCCAM project. In her presentation, she focused on the research area of pelagic fisheries in the Northeast Atlantic. Unn described the current situation regarding fuel use in this fishery and highlighted innovative, science-based solutions to adapt fisheries to climate change and reduce the environmental impact of the sector. Unn also briefly presented the OCCAM project, a sister project to MeCCAM, which aims to develop and provide the European aquaculture sector with advanced technologies and solutions to reduce the challenges posed by climate change.
