Our team attends the OCCAM annual meeting in Vigo

This week our staff Magni, Juliana and Unn have been in Vigo, Galicia in connection with the annual meeting of the OCCAM project. The OCCAM project is about how aquaculture can adapt to climate change and reduce greenhouse gas emissions within the sector.

The Faroese case study team and the mussel rafts

Eighty percent of Spanish aquaculture takes place in Galicia, where they mainly farm mussels. There climate change has already had a major impact on production. There have been large problems with harmful algal blooms. The increased rainfall has also caused problems, since it affects the salinity of the sea, which in turn reduces mussel growth and survival. At the meeting we also visited a mussel farm, and it was very interesting to learn more about how this production is carried out and hear more about the great socioeconomic importance shellfish farming has in Galicia.

Juliana Arias is presenting the work on assessment the business and socio-economic performance on the OCCAM solutions

Gunnvør á Norði from Firum is presenting the plans for the Faroese case study and the development of the sea lice decision support tool

In the Faroe Islands we are working, together with our Faroese partners Firum, Avrik and Hiddenfjord, on how salmon farming can adapt to climate change, with particular emphasis on how changes in sea temperature will affect sea lice pressure. In this context we are developing a sea lice decision support tool to help regulators and aquaculture companies evaluate their management responses to this challenge. Sjókovin is also responsible for the business and socio-economic assessments within the project.

We are grateful for some very nice and productive days together with our international partners with lots of planning, knowledge sharing and inspiration.
