Conference on Energy Transition in Fisheries

On November 19th, Sjókovin attended a conference on Energy Transitions in Fisheries, held in Göteborg and hosted by the Swedish Research Institute, RISE.

The aim of the conference was to increase the knowledge of how the Nordic countries administer and monitor fuel use and emissions in fisheries. There were many presentations on the agenda, paying attention to the current state of fuel use in fisheries and current challenges relating to data availability and knowledge gaps. Attention was also drawn to measures to reduce emissions in fisheries, with an emphasis on opportunities and challenges related to green transition.

Unn Laksá, presented some preliminary results from the Faroese national project, SmartFisk, which is a collaboration between Sjókovin and Faroese fishing companies, aiming to reduce fuel consumption of Faroese fishing vessels. SmartFisk innovative feature is that it utilises machine learning approaches to measure and evaluate fuel use on individual vessels to establish a better understanding which and the extent to which various factors affect fuel use of vessels. As well as providing an overview of the fuel use of the various fleet segments, Unn provided an illustrative example of how the work had been done, and what lessons could be learnt from this.

The conference ended with a workshop with the aim to discuss opportunities for establishing a long-term collaboration between the Nordic countries, which can support the leading role of the Nordics in sustainable and environmentally-friendly fisheries.
