A successful kick-meeting for MeCCAM
The MeCCAM project is an EU-funded initiative aimed at developing solutions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and adapt European fisheries to climate change.
The MeCCAM project kick-off meeting was held in Tórshavn from 3 to 5 June. A total of 38 experts and researchers from nine European countries attended the meeting. The purpose of the meeting was to plan and structure the work for the coming four years. In addition, two external advisors from Iceland and Ireland took part. During the meeting, participants gave presentations on their roles and activities within the project.
Jóhan Christiansen, Minister of Fisheries and Transport, opened the meeting and welcomed the participants to the Faroe Islands. Unn Laksá, the project coordinator, then presented the overall objectives of the project. This was followed by presentations from representatives of the projects Infinifish, MarineGuardian, and OCCAM, with a focus on collaboration over the next four years.
Representatives from all work packages and case studies subsequently presented their contributions to the project. In addition to presentations, workshops were organised where work packages and case studies met to lay the foundations for the work in the years ahead.
In addition to project partners, external participants also gave presentations on relevant topics, including the current status of climate change and associated challenges, as well as the growing requirements for sustainability communication and how this affects the fisheries sector.
Beyond presentations and workshops, participants also visited the vessel Gøtunes, where the crew explained their operations on board. In addition, a convivial evening was held at the Roykstovan in Kirkjubøur, featuring local food and music by Eivør.
At Sjókovin, we are very excited to lead this important and relevant project and look forward to close and productive cooperation with our partners in the years to come.
