Knowledge for Sustainable Aquaculture
On November 8th, staff from Sjókovin | Blue Resource attended a conference organised by Firum called Vitan til Varandi Aling, which means Knowledge for Sustainable Aquaculture.
At the conference, much of the recent research relevant to aquaculture, both salmon and seaweed, covering ecological, biological, social, economic, and political perspectives, was presented.
Unn Laksá, our CEO, had a presentation on the quantification and valuation of ecosystem services from seaweed aquaculture based on work conducted in the EU projects SeaMark and Aquavitae. Unn set the scene by considering seaweed aquaculture as a nature-based solution that can reduce the pressures humans are putting on the earth. Seaweed from the Faroe Islands is CO2 neutral, it takes up nutrients emitted by agriculture and fish farming and provides habitat and shelter for many animals. It can, therefore, help restore the ocean’s health and biodiversity.
The main conclusion was that seaweed can provide a great alternative to other products with higher emissions and other negative environmental impacts. It is also a great means to improve the utilisation of the fjords alongside other aquaculture and diversify aquaculture production.
